Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

'See the beauty of the daughter of Jerusalem, who ascended to heaven like the rising sun at dawn.'

-- Benedictus antiphon from Daily Office

August 15 is the day that Catholics have long celebrated what is called the Dormition (falling asleep) or Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The Feast of the Assumption celebrates both the happy departure of Mary from this life by her natural death, and her assumption bodily into heaven.

Saint Maximilian Kolbe

Our Lady's Fool

Today is the feast day of St. Maximilian Kolbe, one of my favorite modern saints! He is the founder of the Militia of the Immaculata (Army of Mary), and regarded as the patron of journalists, families, prisoners, and pro-life advocates.

He received a vision of the Virgin Mary that changed his life.

I asked the Mother of God what was to become of me. Then she came to me holding two crowns, one white, the other red. She asked if I was willing to accept either of these crowns. The white one meant that I should persevere in purity, and the red that I should become a martyr. I said that I would accept them both. - Saint Maximilian

I never get tired reading the book 'Our Lady's Fool' whenever I read St. Maximilian Kolbe' life story it still makes me cry and it always touches the inner depths of my heart. No wonder he is my favorite modern saint!
